Gathering Music:

Welcome & Opening Prayer:                              Rev. Andrew Davis

*Hymn of Praise:           Good Christian Friends, Rejoice – UMH 224[i]

1.    Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice;

Give ye heed to what we say.  News, News!

Jesus Christ is born today!  Ox and ass before him bow,

And he is in the manger now.

Christ is born today, Christ is born today!

2.    Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice;

Now ye hear of endless bliss: News, News!

Jesus Christ was born for this!  He hath opened heaven’s door,

And ye are blest forever more.

Christ was born for this.  Christ was born for this!

3.    Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice;

Now ye need not fear the grave: News, news!

Jesus Christ was born to save!  Calls you one and calls you all

To gain his everlasting hall.

Christ was born to save, Christ was born to save!

Hebrew Bible Lesson:                      Isaiah 61: 10-62: 3 (NRSV)

10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
    my whole being shall exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its shoots,
    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
    to spring up before all the nations.

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
    and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,
until her vindication shines out like the dawn,
    and her salvation like a burning torch.
The nations shall see your vindication,
    and all the kings your glory;
and you shall be called by a new name
    that the mouth of the Lord will give.
You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

*Epistle Lesson:                                     Galatians 4: 4-7 (NRSV)

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

Words of God, Words of Life: Thanks be to God!

Meditation:   Rev. Dr. Blake Busick, Great Northern District Superintendent

“Rejoice in the Lord and Change the World”

Response:                                           Like a Child – FWS 2092[ii]

1.    Like a child love would send to reveal and to mend,

Like a child and a friend, Jesus comes.

Like a child we may find, claiming heart, soul, and mind,

Like a child strong and kind, Jesus comes.

2.    Like a child we will meet, ragged clothes, dirty feet,

Like a child on the street, Jesus comes.

Like a child we once knew coming back into view,

Like a child born anew, Jesus comes.

3.    Like a child born to pray and to show us the way,

Like a child here to stay, Jesus comes.

Like a child we receive all that love can conceive,

Like a child we believe, Jesus comes.

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

*Closing Hymn:                            He is Born – UMH 228[iii]

Refrain:

            He is born, the holy child, play the oboe and bagpipes merrily!

            He is born, the holy Child, sing we all of the Savior mild.

1.    Thru long ages of the past, prophets have foretold his coming;

Thru long ages of the past, now the time has come at last.

Refrain

2.    O how lovely, O how pure is this perfect child of heaven;

O how lovely, O how pure, gracious gift to humankind!

Refrain

3.    Jesus, Lord of all the world, coming as a child among us,

Jesus, Lord of all the world, grant to us thy heavenly peace.
