UMH – The United Methodist Hymnal (Red Hymnal)

Gathering Music:                    I’ve Got Peace Like a River, arr. Sandra Eithun; Alice King, Piano

Welcome & Opening Prayer                                                                 Rev. Andrew Davis, Pastor

Hymn of Praise:                                                   Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven – UMH 66

1.   Praise my soul, the King of heaven,

To the throne thy tribute bring;

Ransomed, healed restored, forgiven,

Evermore God’s praises sing.

Alleluia! Alleluia!  Praise the everlasting King.

2.   Praise the Lord for grace and favor

To all people in distress;

Praise God, still the same as ever,

Slow to chide and swift to bless.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Glorious now God’s faithfulness.

3.   Father-like, God tends and spares us;

Well our feeble frame God knows;

Mother-like, God gently bears us,

Rescues us from all our foes.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Widely yet God’s mercy flows.

4.   Angels in the heights, adoring,

You behold God face to face;

Saints triumphant, now adoring,

Gathered in from every race.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Praise with us the God of grace.

Psalm:                                                                                                            Psalm 78: 1-4, 12-16

Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
    incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable;
    I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
    that our ancestors have told us.
We will not hide them from their children;
    we will tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
    and the wonders that he has done.

12 In the sight of their ancestors he worked marvels
    in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.
13 He divided the sea and let them pass through it,
    and made the waters stand like a heap.
14 In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
    and all night long with a fiery light.
15 He split rocks open in the wilderness,
    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16 He made streams come out of the rock,
    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

Hebrew Bible Lesson:                                                                            Exodus 16: 2-15, 17: 1-7

The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.” So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaining against the Lord. For what are we, that you complain against us?” And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening and your fill of bread in the morning, because the Lord has heard the complaining that you utter against him—what are we? Your complaining is not against us but against the Lord.”

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, ‘Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.’” 10 And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 The Lord spoke to Moses and said, 12 “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

13 In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?”[a] For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.

17 From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” The Lord said to Moses, “Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the place Massah[a] and Meribah,[b] because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Meditation:                                                                  “Through the Wilderness: Strike the Rock”

Response:                                                                Fill My Cup, Lord – UMH 641 (Sing Twice)

            Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up, Lord.

            Come and quench this thirsting of my soul.

            Bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more;

            Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole.[i]

            CCLI #15946

Prayers of the People & The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Hymn of Praise:                                                                              All Who Hunger – FWS 2126

1.     All who hunger, gather gladly; holy manna is our bread.

Come from wilderness and wandering.  Here in truth, we will be fed.

You that yearn for days of fullness, all around us is our food.

Taste and see the grace eternal.  Taste and see that God is good.

2.     All who hunger, never strangers; seeker, be a welcome guest.

Come from restlessness and roaming.  Here, in joy, we keep the feast.

We that once were lost and scattered in communion’s love have stood.

Taste and see the grace eternal.  Taste and see that God is good.

3.     All who hunger, sing together; Jesus Christ is living bread.

Come from loneliness and longing.  Here, in peace, we have been led.

Blest are those who from this table live their lives in gratitude.

Taste and see the grace eternal.  Taste and see that God is good.[ii]

Hymn of Praise:                      God is Here – UMH 660, vs. 1 & 4[ii]

           God is here! As we your people meet to offer praise and prayer,

           May we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share.

           Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts

           Wait the coming of the Spirit, into open minds and hearts.

           Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt

           Keep us faithful to the gospel; help us work our purpose out.

           Here, in this day’s dedication, all we have to give, receive;

           We, who cannot live without you, we adore you!  We believe!

Handbell Ensemble:   How Great Thou Art, arr. Patricia Sanders Cota[iii]

Hebrew Bible Lesson:  Exodus 14: 19-31; Exodus 15: 1b-11, 20-21 (NRSV)

19 The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them. 20 It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel. And so the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night.

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided. 22 The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued, and went into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and chariot drivers. 24 At the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the Egyptian army, and threw the Egyptian army into panic. 25 He clogged[a] their chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty. The Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the Israelites, for the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.”

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and chariot drivers.” 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea returned to its normal depth. As the Egyptians fled before it, the Lord tossed the Egyptians into the sea. 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers, the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea; not one of them remained. 29 But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left.

30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Israel saw the great work that the Lord did against the Egyptians. So the people feared the Lord and believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;

horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.
The Lord is my strength and my might,

and he has become my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,

my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
The Lord is a warrior;

the Lord is his name.

“Pharaoh’s chariots and his army he cast into the sea;

his picked officers were sunk in the Red Sea.
The floods covered them;

they went down into the depths like a stone.
Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power—

your right hand, O Lord, shattered the enemy.
In the greatness of your majesty you overthrew your adversaries;

you sent out your fury, it consumed them like stubble.
At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up,

the floods stood up in a heap;

the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.
The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake,

I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them.

I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.’
10 You blew with your wind, the sea covered them;

they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

11 “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?

Who is like you, majestic in holiness,

awesome in splendor, doing wonders?

20 Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Gathering Music:              Fairest Lord Jesus – arr. Fred Bock, adapt. By Lloyd Larson[i]

Welcome & Opening Prayer                                                                  Rev. Andrew Davis

Hymn of Praise:                                               Lead On, O Cloud of Presence – FWS 2234[ii]

1.  Lead on, O cloud of Presence, the exodus is come,

In wilderness and desert our tribe shall make its home.

Our slavery left behind us, new hopes within us grow.

We seek the land of promise where mild and honey flow.

2.  Lead on, O fiery pillar, we follow yet with fears,

But we shall come rejoicing though joy be born of tears.

We are not lost, though wandering, for by your light we come,

And we are still God’s people.  The journey is our home.

3.  Lead on, O God of freedom, and guide us on our way,

And help us trust the promise through struggle and delay.

We pray our sons and daughters may journey to that land

Where justice dwells with mercy, and love is law’s demand.

Psalm:                                                                                                    Psalm 149 (NRSV)

Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
    his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in its Maker;
    let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.
Let them praise his name with dancing,
    making melody to him with tambourine and lyre.
For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;
    he adorns the humble with victory.

Let the faithful exult in glory;
    let them sing for joy on their couches.
Let the high praises of God be in their throats
    and two-edged swords in their hands,
to execute vengeance on the nations
    and punishment on the peoples,
to bind their kings with fetters
    and their nobles with chains of iron,
to execute on them the judgment decreed.
    This is glory for all his faithful ones.
Praise the Lord!

Hebrew Bible Lesson:                                                                 Exodus 12: 1-14 (NRSV)

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. 10 You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. 11 This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

14 This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.

The Word of God for the People of God…Thanks be to God!

Meditation:                                                “Through the Wilderness: Praises & Swords”

Response:                      Where Charity and Love Prevail – UMH 549, vs. 1, 3, 4, & 6[iii]

            Where charity and love prevail, there God is ever found;

            Brought here together by Christ’s love, by love we are thus bound.

            Forgive we now each other’s faults as we our faults confess;

            And let us love each other well in Christian holiness.

            Let strife among us be unknown, let all contention cease;

            Be Christ the glory that we seek, be ours his holy peace.

            Love can exclude no race or creed if honored be God’s name;

            Our common life embraces all whose Maker is the same.

Invitation to Holy Communion:

Holy Communion in The United Methodist Church is open to EVERYONE!!  You do not need to be a member of this church or any church; just simply have an open heart, a sincere repentance of sin, and desire to know and love God and neighbor.  Please have a piece of bread or cracker with you and a cup of juice or beverage of choice.  You will be guided through the liturgy by Pastor Andrew and instructed when to eat the bread and drink the juice.

Confession (Altogether):

            God of love, God of mercy;

            We come to you at this time to confess our faults to you and each other,

            We come to confess that we have failed to live up to your expectations,

            That we have fallen short and missed the mark.

We have failed to love each other at times, choosing sides, and drawing lines to divide instead of unite.

We have taken your name and used it in vain, or have created you in our image instead of listening to you and allowing you to guide our way.

We seek your mercy today, O Lord and seek forgiveness for the ways that we fall short, both intentionally and unintentionally.

This we now confess to you:

Silent confession

Hear the Good News: Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

This is a sign of God’s infinite love and grace for all of us.

In the name of Christ, YOU are forgiven.

In the name of Christ, we are ALL forgiven.  Alleluia, Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving (Please Respond in Bold Print):                               UMH 12-15

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
Father Almighty (Almighty God), creator of heaven and earth.

We praise you for all who labor for the common good
and for those whose service is unappreciated.

We thank you for children whose play is the work of learning to live in the world.

We thank you for disciples who are obedient
to the promptings of your Spirit in all their relationships.

We thank you for your yearning mercy
that waits for us to make all our hours and days participation in your healing and blessing of the earth and all peoples.

…And so,
with your people on earth
and all the company of heaven
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.  Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

…And so,
in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves to live daily as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith.[iv]

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again!!

…Through your son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in your Holy Church, all honor and glory are yours, almighty God, now and forever.

Amen

Prayers of the People & The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Prayer After Receiving

Closing Hymn:                    They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love – FWS 2223[v]

1.    We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,

And we pray that all unity may one day be restored:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;

Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

2.    We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand,

We will walk with each other we will walk hand in hand,

And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;

Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

3.    We will work with each other, we will work side by side.

We will work with each other, we will work side by side,

And we’ll guard human dignity and save human pride:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;

Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

4.    All praise to the Father, from whom all things come.

And all praise to Christ Jesus, God’s only Son,

And all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;

Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
