UMH – The United Methodist Hymnal (Red Hymnal)
Gathering Music: Fairest Lord Jesus – arr. Fred Bock, adapt. By Lloyd Larson[i]
Welcome & Opening Prayer Rev. Andrew Davis
Hymn of Praise: Lead On, O Cloud of Presence – FWS 2234[ii]
1. Lead on, O cloud of Presence, the exodus is come,
In wilderness and desert our tribe shall make its home.
Our slavery left behind us, new hopes within us grow.
We seek the land of promise where mild and honey flow.
2. Lead on, O fiery pillar, we follow yet with fears,
But we shall come rejoicing though joy be born of tears.
We are not lost, though wandering, for by your light we come,
And we are still God’s people. The journey is our home.
3. Lead on, O God of freedom, and guide us on our way,
And help us trust the promise through struggle and delay.
We pray our sons and daughters may journey to that land
Where justice dwells with mercy, and love is law’s demand.
Psalm: Psalm 149 (NRSV)
1 Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
2 Let Israel be glad in its Maker;
let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.
3 Let them praise his name with dancing,
making melody to him with tambourine and lyre.
4 For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;
he adorns the humble with victory.
5 Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy on their couches.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their throats
and two-edged swords in their hands,
7 to execute vengeance on the nations
and punishment on the peoples,
8 to bind their kings with fetters
and their nobles with chains of iron,
9 to execute on them the judgment decreed.
This is glory for all his faithful ones.
Praise the Lord!
Hebrew Bible Lesson: Exodus 12: 1-14 (NRSV)
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: 2 This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. 3 Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. 4 If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. 7 They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. 10 You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. 11 This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
14 This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.
The Word of God for the People of God…Thanks be to God!
Meditation: “Through the Wilderness: Praises & Swords”
Response: Where Charity and Love Prevail – UMH 549, vs. 1, 3, 4, & 6[iii]
Where charity and love prevail, there God is ever found;
Brought here together by Christ’s love, by love we are thus bound.
Forgive we now each other’s faults as we our faults confess;
And let us love each other well in Christian holiness.
Let strife among us be unknown, let all contention cease;
Be Christ the glory that we seek, be ours his holy peace.
Love can exclude no race or creed if honored be God’s name;
Our common life embraces all whose Maker is the same.
Invitation to Holy Communion:
Holy Communion in The United Methodist Church is open to EVERYONE!! You do not need to be a member of this church or any church; just simply have an open heart, a sincere repentance of sin, and desire to know and love God and neighbor. Please have a piece of bread or cracker with you and a cup of juice or beverage of choice. You will be guided through the liturgy by Pastor Andrew and instructed when to eat the bread and drink the juice.
Confession (Altogether):
God of love, God of mercy;
We come to you at this time to confess our faults to you and each other,
We come to confess that we have failed to live up to your expectations,
That we have fallen short and missed the mark.
We have failed to love each other at times, choosing sides, and drawing lines to divide instead of unite.
We have taken your name and used it in vain, or have created you in our image instead of listening to you and allowing you to guide our way.
We seek your mercy today, O Lord and seek forgiveness for the ways that we fall short, both intentionally and unintentionally.
This we now confess to you:
Silent confession
Hear the Good News: Christ died for us while we were still sinners.
This is a sign of God’s infinite love and grace for all of us.
In the name of Christ, YOU are forgiven.
In the name of Christ, we are ALL forgiven. Alleluia, Amen.
The Great Thanksgiving (Please Respond in Bold Print): UMH 12-15
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
Father Almighty (Almighty God), creator of heaven and earth.
We praise you for all who labor for the common good
and for those whose service is unappreciated.
We thank you for children whose play is the work of learning to live in the world.
We thank you for disciples who are obedient
to the promptings of your Spirit in all their relationships.
We thank you for your yearning mercy
that waits for us to make all our hours and days participation in your healing and blessing of the earth and all peoples.
…And so,
with your people on earth
and all the company of heaven
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
…And so,
in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves to live daily as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith.[iv]
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again!!
…Through your son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in your Holy Church, all honor and glory are yours, almighty God, now and forever.
Amen
Prayers of the People & The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Prayer After Receiving
Closing Hymn: They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love – FWS 2223[v]
1. We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored:
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
2. We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand,
We will walk with each other we will walk hand in hand,
And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land:
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
3. We will work with each other, we will work side by side.
We will work with each other, we will work side by side,
And we’ll guard human dignity and save human pride:
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
4. All praise to the Father, from whom all things come.
And all praise to Christ Jesus, God’s only Son,
And all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one:
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
