UMC Mission:

To Make Disciples of Jesus Christ For the Transformation of the World

Community UMC Mission:

We are a Christ-centered community, joyfully committed to being His ambassadors.  In the fellowship of His love and grace, we grow in Christ through the study of God’s word, prayer and worship; living out our faith in service to others.

Please participate as fully as you wish, or simply take it all in.  Please turn off your cell phones or other electronic devices (if possible).  Please keep face coverings on the entire time and maintain social distancing practices for the entire service.  Wave, nod your head, or give the peace sign for greeting, as we are not able to shake hands or hug quite yet.  You may sing softly with face covering on, or mouth the words of the hymns.  If you need to use the restroom, please let the usher in the back get you the key.  There is no coffee hour afterward but will be a virtual social on Zoom from 11:45am-12:30pm (visit church website for login info., as it will be the worship login).

I AM the good shepherd
(the one who tends us,
guides us into pastures,
who recognizes the sounds of our names).

I AM the good shepherd
(the one who bends to heal us
travels through the deepest valleys with us who gives up everything for us all).

I AM the good shepherd
(the one whose rod and staff comfort us whose strength and love holds us whose cup of love runneth over).

I AM the good shepherd and we will dwell
in the house of the Lord forever

Let us gather here God’s People
in God’s love
for God’s world.[i]

*Hymn of Praise:                       Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us – UMH 381, vs. 1 & 3

Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need thy tender care;

In thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use thy folds prepare.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!  Thou hast bought us, thine we are.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!  Thou hast bought use, thine we are.

Thou hast promised to receive us, poor and sinful though we be;

Thou hast mercy to relieve us, grace to cleanse and power to free.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!  We will early turn to thee.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!  We will early turn to thee.

Young People’s Lesson (Please Remain in Seat)

Hebrew Bible Lesson:                                                                                     Psalm 23 (KJV)

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul:

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;

Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Gospel Lesson:                                                                                    John 10: 11-18 (NRSV)

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes[a]it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”

May God add a blessing to the reading, hearing,

understanding and living of this word.

Sermon:                                                                                                    “Listen to My Voice”

                                                                                                                       Rev. Andrew Davis

Response:                                                             Spirit Song – UMH 347

1.     O let the Son of God enfold you with his Spirit and his love.

Let him fill your heart and satisfy your soul.

O give let him have the things that hold you,

And his Spirit like a dove will descend upon your life and make you whole.

Refrain:

            Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.

            Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.

2.     O come and sing this song of gladness as your hearts are filled with joy.

Lift your hands in sweet surrender to his name.

O give him all your tears of sadness; give him all your years of pain,

And you’ll enter into life in Jesus’ name.

Refrain[ii]

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer (Altogether):

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen

Closing Hymn:                                                 Jesus Shall Reign – UMH 157, vs. 1, 4, & 5

           Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does its successive journeys run;

His kingdom spread from shore to shore,

till moons shall wax and wane no more.

Blessings abound where’er he reigns; all prisoners leap and lose their chains;

The weary find eternal rest,

And all who suffer want are blest.

Let every creature rise and bring honors peculiar to our King;

Angels descend with songs again,

And earth repeat the loud amen!

A Service of Praise and Worship

Pastor: This is the day the Lord has made!

People: Let us rejoyce and be glad in it!

*We Gather Singing:

“Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” P. 103 UMH

1.     Immortal, invisible, God only wise,

in light inaccessible hid from our eyes.

Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,

Almighty, victorious, thy greatness we praise.

2.     Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,

Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;

Thy justice like mountains high soaring above

Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

3.     To all, life thou givest, to both great and small;

In all life thou livest, the true life of all;

We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,

And wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.

4.     Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light;

Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;

All laud we would render: O help us to see

‘tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.

*The Apostles Creed:                       P. 882 UMH

          I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

          I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

                   Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

                   Born of Virgin Mary,

                   Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

                   Was crucified, died, and was buried;

                   He descended to the dead,

                   On the third day he rose again;

                   He ascended into heaven,

                   Is seated at the right hand of the Father,

                   And will come again to judge the living and the dead.

          I believe in the Holy Spirit,

                   The holy catholic church,

                   The communion of saints,

                   The forgiveness of sins,

                   The resurreciton of the body

                   And the life everlasting.  Amen.

*“Glory Be to the Father”         P. 70    UMH

          Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

          As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be,

          World without end.  Amen.  Amen.

We Hear the Word

Hymn:  “Wonderful Words of Life”    P. 600 UMH

1.     Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life;

Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life;

Words of life and beauty teach me faith and duty.

Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.

Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.

2.     Christ, the blessed on, gives to all wonderful words of life;

Sinner, list to the loving call, wonderful words of life;

All so freely given, wooing us to heaven.

Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life;

Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.

3.     Sweetly echo the gospel call, wonderful words of life;

Offer pardon and peace to all, wonderful words of life;

Jesus, only Savior, sanctify forever.

Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life

Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.

The Scripture: John 20:19-31

19 That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. 20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! 21 Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” 22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.

24 One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came. 25 They told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.”

26 Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!”

28 “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.

29 Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

30 The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

The Sermon: Doubt in the Time of Covid-19

                                                Rev. Ray Dowdy

Sending Forth

  *"Bind Us Together”              P. 2226 TFWS

          Bind us, together, Lord, bind us together

          With cords that cannot be broken.

          Bind us, together, Lord, bind us together, Lord,

          Bind us, together in love.

          There is only one God, there is only one King;

          There is only one body, that is why we sing.

          Bind us, together, Lord, bind us together

          With cords that cannot be broken.

          Bind us, together, Lord, bind us together, Lord,

          Bind us, together in love.[ii]

Benediction
