FWS – The Faith We Sing (Black Hymnal)

UMH – The United Methodist Hymnal (Red Hymnal)

Welcome & Opening Prayer                                                                   Rev. Andrew Davis

Hymn of Praise:                              I Sing the Almighty Power of God – UMH 152

1.    I sing the almighty power of God, that made the mountains rise;

That spread the flowing seas abroad,

and built the lofty skies.

I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;

The moon shines full at God’s command, and all the stars obey.

2.    I sing the goodness of the Lord, who filled the earth with food,

Who formed the creatures thru the Word,

and then pronounced them good.

Lord, how thy wonders are displayed, where e’re I turn my eye,

If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky.

3.    There’s not a plant or flower below, but makes thy glories known,

And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from thy throne;

While all that borrows life from thee is ever in thy care;

And everywhere that we can be, thou, God art present there.

Lesson for Children & Young at Heart:                       Grandma Susie

Epistle Lesson:                                                         Romans 10: 5-15 (NRSV)

Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say?

“The word is near you,
              on your lips and in your heart”

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because[b] if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

14 But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Gospel Lesson:                                                                   Matthew 14: 13-21 (NRSV)

22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”

28 Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Meditation:                                          “Because God: The Word is Near You”

Questions for Reflection this Week:

·      When have you encountered Christ in the midst of a storm of life?

·      How do you share the word that is near you with others?

Response:                                     Precious Lord, Take My Hand – UMH 474[i]

1.    Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand,

I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;

Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light:

Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

2.    When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near,

When my life is almost gone,

Hear my cry, hear my call, hold my hand lest I fall:

Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

3.    When the darkness appears and the night draws near,

And the day is past and gone,

At the river I stand, guide my feet, hold my hand:

Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

Prayers of the People & The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Closing Hymn:                         I Love to Tell the Story – UMH 156

1.    I love to tell the story of unseen things above,

Of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.

I love to tell the story, because I know ‘til true;

It satisfies my longing as nothing else can do.

Refrain:

         I love to tell the story, ‘twill be my theme in glody,

         To tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

2.    I love to tell the story; more wonderful it seems

Than all the golden fancies of all our golden dreams.

I love to tell the story, it did so much for me;

And that is just the reason I tell it now to thee.

Refrain

3.    I love to tell the story; ‘til pleasant to repeat

What seems each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.

I love to tell the story, for some have never heard

The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word.

Refrain

4.    I love to tell the story, for those who knew it best

Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.

And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,

‘twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long.

Refrain
