Gathering Music:      What a Friend We Have in Jesus – arr. Martha Sherill Kelsey[i]

Welcome                                                                      Martin Byrne, Lay Leader

Beatitudes for Laity

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for they know the unutterable beauty of simple things.

Blessed are those who mourn,
for they have dared to risk their hearts by giving of their love.

Blessed are the meek,
for the gentle earth shall embrace them and hallow them as its own.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall know the taste of noble thoughts and deeds.

Blessed are the merciful,
for in return theirs is the gift of giving.

Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall be at one with themselves and the universe.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for theirs is a kinship with everything that is holy.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for the truth will set them free.[ii]

Hymn of Praise:                   Would I Have Answered When You Called? – FWS 2137

1.    Would I have answered when you called, “Come follow, follow me?”

Would I have once have left behind both work and family?

Or would the old, familiar round have held me by its claim

And kept the spark within my heart from bursting into flame?

2.    Would I have followed where you led through ancient Galilee,

On roads unknown, by ways untried, beyond security?

Or would I soon have hurried back where home and comfort drew,

Where truth you taught would not disturb the ordered world I knew?

3.    Would I have matched step with yours when crowds cried, “Crucify!”

When on a rocky hill I saw a cross against the sky?

Or would I too have slipped away and left you there alone,

A dying king with crown of thorns upon a terrible throne?

4.    O Christ, I cannot search my heart through all its tangled ways,

Nor can I with a certain mind my steadfastness appraise.

I only pray that when you call, “Come follow, follow me!”

You’ll give me strength beyond my own to follow faithfully.[iii]

Hebrew Bible Lesson:                                      Exodus 33: 12-23 (The Message)

12-13 Moses said to God, “Look, you tell me, ‘Lead this people,’ but you don’t let me know whom you’re going to send with me. You tell me, ‘I know you well and you are special to me.’ If I am so special to you, let me in on your plans. That way, I will continue being special to you. Don’t forget, this is your people, your responsibility.”

14 God said, “My presence will go with you. I’ll see the journey to the end.”

15-16 Moses said, “If your presence doesn’t take the lead here, call this trip off right now. How else will it be known that you’re with me in this, with me and your people? Are you traveling with us or not? How else will we know that we’re special, I and your people, among all other people on this planet Earth?”

17 God said to Moses: “All right. Just as you say; this also I will do, for I know you well and you are special to me. I know you by name.”

18 Moses said, “Please. Let me see your Glory.”

19 God said, “I will make my Goodness pass right in front of you; I’ll call out the name, God, right before you. I’ll treat well whomever I want to treat well and I’ll be kind to whomever I want to be kind.”

20 God continued, “But you may not see my face. No one can see me and live.”

21-23 God said, “Look, here is a place right beside me. Put yourself on this rock. When my Glory passes by, I’ll put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with my hand until I’ve passed by. Then I’ll take my hand away and you’ll see my back. But you won’t see my face.”[v]

Meditation:                                                          “Pressing On: Called by Name”

         Reflections by Susie Grant Steuben, Martin Byrne, & Charlotte Walters.

Response:                                                                   Lead Me, Lord – UMH 473

         Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness;

Make my way plain before thy face.

         For it is thou, Lord, Thou, Lord only,

         That makest me dwell in safety.

Prayers of the People & The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Closing Hymn:                                                        I am Thine, O Lord – UMH 419

1.  I am thine, O Lord, I have heard thy voice, and it told thy love to me;

But I long to rise in the arms of faith

and be closer drawn to thee.

Refrain:

        Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord to the cross where thou hast died.

        Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,

        to thy precious, bleeding side.

2.  Consecrate me now to thy service, Lord, by the power of grace diving;

Let thy soul look up with a steadfast hope,

and my will be lost in thine.

Refrain

3.  O the pure delight of a single hour that before thy throne I spend,

When I kneel in prayer, and with thee, my God,

I commune as friend with friend.

Refrain

4.  There are depths of love that I cannot know till I cross the narrow sea;

There are heights of joy that I may not reach

till I rest in peace with thee.

Refrain.
