UMH – United Methodist Hymnal (Red Hymnal)

FWS – The Faith we Sing (Black Hymnal)

Gathering Music:                             Faith of Our Fathers – arr. Jerry Ray[i]

Welcome:                                                                    Rev. Andrew Davis

Opening Prayer:

We give you thanks, O God, for all the saints who ever worshiped you

Whether in brush arbors or cathedrals,

Weathered wooden churches or crumbling cement meeting houses Where your name was lifted and adored.

We give you thanks, O God, for hands lifted in praise: Manicured hands and hands stained with grease or soil, Strong hands and those gnarled with age

Holy hands

Used as wave offerings across the land.

We thank you, God, for hardworking saints; Whether hard-hatted or steel-booted, Head ragged or aproned,

Blue-collared or three-piece-suited
They left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come.

Thank you, God, for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us. Bless the memories of your saints, God.

May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love.[ii]

*Hymn of Praise:                For All the Saints – UMH 711, vs. 1, 2, 4, 6

For all the saints, whom from their labors rest,

Who thee by faith before the world confessed,

Thy name O Jesus, be forever blest.

Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;

Thou Lord, their captain, in the well-fought fight;

Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light.

Alleluia, Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine!

We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;

Yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.

Alleluia, Alleuia!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams,

In the countless host,

Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:

Alleluia, Alleluia!

Lesson:                                                                                          Revelation 7: 9-17 (NRSV)

After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying,

“Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 singing,

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honor
and power and might
be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15 For this reason they are before the throne of God,
    and worship him day and night within his temple,
    and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.
16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
    the sun will not strike them,
    nor any scorching heat;
17 for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd,
    and he will guide them to springs of the water of life,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

*Gospel Lesson:                                             Matthew 5: 1-12 (NRSV)

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Word of God for the People of God: Thanks Be to God!

Sermon                                                                       Rev. Andrew Davis

“Singing the Song of the Saints of God”

Response:                                     Hymn of Promise – UMH 707[iii]

1.    In the bulb, there is a flower, in the seed, an apple tree;

in cocoons a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free!

In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

2.    There’s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody;

there’s a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me.

From the past will come the future; what it holds a mystery,

unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

3.    In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity;

in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity.

In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory,

unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

Prayer of Remembrance

Invitation to Holy Communion

Confession (Please Respond in Bold Print):

God, you send us saints ...

And we imprison them, or nail them on crosses. Have mercy.

God, you send us saints ...

And we persuade ourselves that they are fools, or meddlers or incompetents. Have mercy.

God, you send us saints ...

And we hate them for reminding us that our comfort requires the poverty of others. Have mercy.

God, you send us saints ...

And we ignore them. Have mercy.

(Some moments of reflective silence

God’s Word to us is a word of forgiveness, a word of assurance, a word of grace. We are loved and accepted because we are we and God is God and nothing can finally separate us from our Creator, our Parent, our Sustainer. Amen.[iv]

The Great Thanksgiving (Please Respond in Bold Print)[v]:

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise…

…And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven,

     we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

     heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

…And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,

     we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving

     as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us,

     as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

…Renew our communion with all your saints,

     especially those whom we name before you—

     Name(s) —(in our hearts).

…Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church,

     all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father (God), now and for ever.

Amen.

Prayers of the People/The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Sharing Holy Communion Together:

Holy Communion in The United Methodist Church is open to EVERYONE!!  You do not need to be a member of this church or any church; just simply have an open heart, a sincere repentance of sin, and desire to know and love God and neighbor by living in peace with one another.  Please have a piece of bread or cracker, and cup of juice or beverage of choice.  Pastor Andrew will let you know when to eat and drink.

Prayer After Receiving

*Closing Hymn:               I Sing a Song of the Saints of God – UMH 712

1.    I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true,

 who toiled and fought and lived and died

 for the Lord they loved and knew.

 And one was a doctor, and one was a queen,

 and one was a shepherdess on the green;

 they were all of them saints of God, and I mean,

 God helping to be one too.

2.    They loved their Lord so dear, do dear,

and his love made them strong;

and they followed the right for Jesus’ sake

the whole of their good lives long.

And one was a soldier, and one was a priest,

and one was slain by a fierce wild beast;

and there’s not any reason, no, not the least,

why I shouldn’t be one too.

3.    They lived not only in ages past;

there are hundreds of thousands still.

The world is bright with the joyous saints

who love to do Jesus’ will.

You can meet them in school, on the street in the store,

in church, by the sea, in the house next door;

they are saints of God, whether rich or poor,

and I mean to be one too.[vi]
