Gathering Music:             Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus, arr. Stan Pethel

Welcome:                                                                   Rev. Andrew Davis

Lighting the Candle of Hope:

From far and wide, we come together on a journey to the manger.

With hope in our hearts, we wait expectantly for our world to change.

As we light the first candle of Advent, the candle of hope,

we remember to keep God’s light shining bright for all to see.

This candle reminds us that God’s hope and light brings change to our world.

(Light the first Advent Candle)

Prayer

Lord, this Advent season begins in difficult times

and in unfamiliar ways.

Help us stay awake to your presence, O Lord,

that hope may prevail within our souls.

Focus our hearts on your promised change in our world,

that others see hope and love growing deep within us

and feel comfort through our actions.

In Your precious Son’s name, we pray. Amen.

*Hymn of Praise:     O Come, Come Emmanuel – UMH 211, vs. 1-3[i]

1.    O Come, O come, Emmanuel,

and ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here

until the Son of God appears.

Refrain:

            Rejoice!  Rejoice!  Emmanuel.  Shall come to thee, O Israel.

2.    O come, thou Wisdom from on high,

and order all things far and night;

To us the path of knowledge show

and cause us in her ways to go.

Refrain

3.    O come, O come, great Lord of might,

who to thy tribes on Sinai’s height

In ancient times once gave the law

in cloud in majesty and awe.

Refrain

Hebrew Bible Lesson:                                     Isaiah 64: 1-9 (NRSV)

O that you would tear open the heavens and come down,
    so that the mountains would quake at your presence—
 as when fire kindles brushwood
    and the fire causes water to boil—
to make your name known to your adversaries,
    so that the nations might tremble at your presence!
When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect,
    you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
From ages past no one has heard,
    no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
    who works for those who wait for him.
You meet those who gladly do right,
    those who remember you in your ways.
But you were angry, and we sinned;
    because you hid yourself we transgressed.
We have all become like one who is unclean,
    and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth.
We all fade like a leaf,
    and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
There is no one who calls on your name,
    or attempts to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
    and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.
Yet, O Lord, you are our Father;
    we are the clay, and you are our potter;
    we are all the work of your hand.
Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord,
    and do not remember iniquity forever.
    Now consider, we are all your people.

*Gospel Lesson:                                           Mark 13: 24-37 (NRSV)

24 “But in those days, after that suffering,

the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light,
25 and the stars will be falling from heaven,
    and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

26 Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. 27 Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

28 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he[a] is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Beware, keep alert;[b] for you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35 Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36 or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

Words of God, Words of Life: Thanks be to God!

Preparation:                                        Welcome to Our World, vs. 1[ii]

            Tears are falling, hearts are breaking, how we need to hear from God.

            You’ve been promised, we’ve been waiting, welcome holy Child,

            Welcome holy Child.

Meditation                                                                Rev. Andrew Davis

“Welcome to our World: How We Need to Hear from God”

Response/Invitation to Prayer:                   Star Child – FWS 2095, vs. 1[iii]

            Star-Child, earth-Child, go-between of God,

            Love Child, Christ Child, heaven’s lightning rod,

            This year, this year, let the day arrive

when Christmas comes for everyone, everyone alive!

Prayers of the People/The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

*Closing Hymn:                       Blessed be the God of Israel – UMH 209[iv]

1.    Blessed be the God of Israel, who comes to set us free,

Who visits and redeems us, and grants us liberty.

The prophets spoke of mercy, of freedom and release;

God shall fulfill the promise to bring our people peace.

2.    Now from the house of David a child of grace is given;

A Savior comes among us to raise us up to heaven.

Before him goes the herald, forerunner in the way,

The prophet of salvation, the harbinger of day.

3.    On prisoners of darkness the sun begins to rise,

The dawning of forgiveness upon the sinners’ eyes,

To guide the feet of pilgrims along the paths of peace;

O bless our God and Savior with songs that never cease!
