Lighting the Candle of Peace:

Reading:

How shall we pray?

How shall we rejoice?

How shall we experience God in new ways?

Here, we come and stay.

Here, we join together with one voice.

Here, we come to be amazed and to gaze.

As we light the second candle of Advent, the candle of peace,

we take time to reflect on God’s light shining in the world,

and pause to feel Christ’s peace seeping into our very bones.

(Light the first and second Advent Candles.)

Prayer:

Our comfort rests in you, O Lord.

Our peace resides in you.

Remind us of your promise,

proclaimed through the prophet Isaiah,

that your glory shall be revealed,

and that everyone will see it together.

Bless us with your peace this day,

that the light of your hope and love

will amaze us once more.

In Your Son’s precious name, we pray. Amen. © 2020 Harriet Wilkin (Use by Permission)

*Hymn of Praise:             Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus – UMH 196

1.  Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free;

From our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee.

Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art;

Dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.

2.  Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King,

Born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.

By thine own eternal spirit rule in all our hearts alone;

By thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne.

Hebrew Bible Lesson:                             Isaiah 40: 1-11 (NRSV)

Comfort, O comfort my people,
    says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
    and cry to her
that she has served her term,
    that her penalty is paid,
that she has received from the
Lord’s hand
    double for all her sins.

A voice cries out:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the
Lord,
    make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
    and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
    and the rough places a plain.
Then the glory of the
Lord shall be revealed,
    and all people shall see it together,
    for the mouth of the
Lord has spoken.”

A voice says, “Cry out!”
    And I said, “What shall I cry?”
All people are grass,
    their constancy is like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
    when the breath of the
Lord blows upon it;
    surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades;
    but the word of our God will stand forever.
Get you up to a high mountain,
    O Zion, herald of good tidings;
lift up your voice with strength,
    O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,
    lift it up, do not fear;
say to the cities of Judah,
    “Here is your God!”
10 See, the Lord
God comes with might,
    and his arm rules for him;
his reward is with him,
    and his recompense before him.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
    he will gather the lambs in his arms,
and carry them in his bosom,
    and gently lead the mother sheep.

*Gospel Lesson:                                                 Mark 1: 1-8 (NRSV)

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,

“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way;
the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
    ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight,’”

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Words of God, Words of Life: Thanks be to God!

Preparation:                                     Welcome to Our World, vs. 1 & 2[i]

            Tears are falling, hearts are breaking,

            how we need to hear from God.

            You’ve been promised, we’ve been waiting, welcome holy Child,

            Welcome holy Child.

            Hope that you don’t mind our manger,

            how I wish we would have known.

            But long-awaited holy stranger, make yourself at home,

            Please make yourself at home.

Meditation                                              Rev. Andrew Davis

“Welcome to our World: Hope that you don’t Mind our Manger”

Response:                                             Star Child – FWS 2095, vs. 2[ii]

            Street child, beat child, no place left to go,

            Hurt child, used child, no one wants to know,

            This year, this year, let the day arrive

            When Christmas comes for everyone, everyone alive!

Invitation to Holy Communion

Confession (Altogether):

Great God of Presence and Promised Coming,

We confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart.

We have failed to fulfill your desire for us to love one another.

We have not followed the paths you have given us,

            Choosing instead to follow our own.

We have broken relationships,

We chase consumer desires,

We treat those who wait on us as less than human.

We have rebelled against your love;

We spend our time and money,

            on gifts for those who give us gifts.

We have not loved our neighbors, we spend time

            With family and friends out of obligation rather than

sincere love.

We have not hear the cry of the needy,

The mouth of the poor is still hungry for mercy,

The cause of the oppressed is still thirsty for justice.

Free us for joyful obedience, through the Advent of Christ,

Our Lord, Our Messiah, Our Hope.  Amen.

Silent Reflection

Good News!  Good News!  Good News!!

God so loved the world that he gave

Sinful and broken humanity a gift: Emmanuel, God with us.

This Proves God’s Love toward us!

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!

Glory to God!  Amen.[iii]

The Great Thanksgiving (Please Respond in Bold Print):

Prepare the way of the Lord!

Straighten our crooked paths, O God!

The day of the Christ’s coming draws near.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

The Spirit of the Lord is in this place.

Pray through us now, Holy Spirit.

Pray through us now,
that we may praise you,
Holy, Triune God,
with angels and archangels,
with beings in heaven and all creatures on earth, with all who have ever sung this hymn of praise:

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed are you, Jesus Christ, Word made flesh,
making all things new.

Blessed are you, Jesus Christ!

Blessed are you, Holy Spirit,
dissolving every chain of sin that binds us, rebuking every power that enslaves, purifying our hearts,
challenging every action not moved by love, and setting all creation free.

Blessed are you, Holy Spirit.

Blessed are you, El Shaddai,

feeding your people,
gathering us like lambs in your arms, and leading us to life eternal.

Blessed are you, El Shaddai!

We know the end that lies before us and all things:
The elemental powers of this universe shall be burned away, the heavens vaporized,
the earth and all our doings exposed for all to see.

We know the end, and we tremble.

We also know your promise,
out of conflagration to re-create, out of chaos to re-order,
out of such destruction to renew.

We know your promise, and we rejoice.

We rejoice, for you are with us,
coming to us in flesh long ago,
coming into our flesh in bread and cup at this, Christ’s table, coming into this world through your Church
in the power of the Spirit,
and coming again to complete what you have begun,
and now feed us to continue.

Feed us, O God.

Feed us as Jesus fed his disciples
on the night he was betrayed,
taking bread, blessing you, breaking it,
saying to those to whom he gave it:
This is my body given for you. Take, eat, and remember me.

Quench our thirst now as Jesus did that night,
taking cup, giving thanks to you,
and saying to those to whom he gave it:
This is my blood poured out for you. Drink, and remember me.

Only you can feed us, God.

Only you can make us holy.

Only you can prepare us for the end to come.

Only you can purify our hearts.

So come, Holy Spirit,
on these gifts of bread and wine, and on us.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Feed us with the bread that lasts forever, the body of Christ.

Slake our thirst with the cup of immortality, the blood of Christ.

Come, Holy Spirit.

And so nourish us in holy living, today and all our days,
that on that day
when all things are recreated, and on these days

as we wait for the fullness to come, the world may see and know in us the love that moves the universe
to its true end in new beginning through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

By him, with him, and in him,
united in the power of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory are yours,
seated upon the Throne,
one God, now and forever. Amen.[iv]

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Sharing Holy Communion Together:

Holy Communion in The United Methodist Church is open to EVERYONE!!  You do not need to be a member of this church or any church; just simply have an open heart, a sincere repentance of sin, and desire to know and love God and neighbor by living in peace with one another.  Please have a piece of bread or cracker, and cup of juice or beverage of choice.  Pastor Andrew will let you know when to eat and drink.

Prayer After Receiving

*Closing Hymn:                    Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates – 213

1.    Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates; behold the King of glory waits;

The King of kings is drawing near,

the savior of the world is here.

2.    Fling wide the portals of your heat; make it a temple, set apart

From earthly use for heaven’s employ,

adorned with prayer and love and joy.

3.    Redeemer, come, with us abide; our hearts to thee we open wide;

Let us thy inner presence feel;

thy grace and love in us reveal.

4.    Thy Holy Spirit lead us on until our glorious goal is won;

Eternal praise, eternal fame be offered,

Savior, to thy name.
