Gathering Music: Coventry Carol[I]
Alice King, Piano; Rev. Andrew Davis, Organ
Welcome: Rev. Andrew Davis
Lighting the Candle of Joy:
Reading
Joy seems far away some days.
At other moments, we can hardly wait to rejoice again.
As we again light the first two candles,
we add a third light, the candle of joy,
strengthening the shimmer of the first two.
As these lighted candles shine,
we pray for joy to break through
and shine more brightly in our lives.
(Light the first three Advent candles)
Prayer:
Gracious God, shine upon us with your mercy and love.
Spark the light of joy in our hearts,
even as these candles burn brightly
and enlighten our time of worship.
In the name of Christ our light, we pray, Amen.

*Hymn of Praise: I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light – UMH 206[ii]
1. I want to walk as a child of the light, I want to follow Jesus.
God set the stars to give light to the world.
The star of my life is Jesus.
Refrain:
In him there is no darkness at all.
The night and the day are both alike.
The lamb is the light of the city of God.
Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.
2. I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus
Clear Sun of Righteousness, shine on my path,
And show me the way to the Father.
Refrain
3. I’m looking for the coming of Christ, I want to be with Jesus.
When we have run with patience the race,
We shall know the joy of Jesus.
Refrain

Hebrew Bible Lesson: Isaiah 61: 1-4, 8-11 (NRSV)
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and release to the prisoners;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion—
to give them a garland instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.
4 They shall build up the ancient ruins,
they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
For I the Lord love justice,
I hate robbery and wrongdoing;[a]
I will faithfully give them their recompense,
and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9 Their descendants shall be known among the nations,
and their offspring among the peoples;
all who see them shall acknowledge
that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed.
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
my whole being shall exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its shoots,
and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
to spring up before all the nations.
Hymn: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing – UMH 240
1. Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful all ye nations ride, join the triumph of the skies;
With th’angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”
Refrain:
Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”
2. Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord;
Late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail th’incarnate Deity,
Pleased with us in flesh to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Refrain
3. Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die,
Born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth.
Refrain
*Gospel Lesson: Luke 1: 46b-55 (NRSV)
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
Words of God, Words of Life: Thanks be to God!
Preparation: Welcome to Our World, vs. 1,2, & 3[iii]
1. Tears are falling, hearts are breaking,
how we need to hear from God.
You’ve been promised, we’ve been waiting, welcome holy Child,
Welcome holy Child.
2. Hope that you don’t mind our manger, how I wish we would have known. But long-awaited holy stranger, make yourself at home,
Please make yourself at home.
3. Bring your peace into our violence, bid our hungry souls be filled.
Word no breaking Heaven’s silence, welcome to our world,
Welcome to our world.
Meditation Rev. Andrew Davis
“Welcome to our World: Bring Your Peace into our Violence”
Response: Star Child – FWS 2095, vs. 3[iv]
Grown child, old child, memory full of years,
Sad child, lost child, story told in tears.
This year, this year, let the day arrive
When Christmas comes for everyone,
Everyone alive!
Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
*Closing Hymn: Hail to the Lord’s Anointed – UMH 203
1. Hail to the Lord’s Anointed, great David’s greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free;
To take away transgression, and rule in equity.
2. He comes with succor speedy to those who suffer wrong;
To help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong;
To give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light,
Whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in his sight.
3. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth;
Love, joy, and hope like flowers, spring in his path to birth.
Before him, on the mountains, shall peace, the herald go,
And righteousness, in fountains, from hill to valley flow.
4. To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows descend;
His kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end.
The tide of time shall never his covenant remove;
His name shall stand forever; that name to us is love.
