Lighting the Candle of Love:
Reading
Love calls to us. Love creates us. Love lives in us.
Love saves us. Love leads us. Love is us.
As we light the fourth Advent candle, the candle of love,
we reflect on love, the greatest light,
even in the circle of peace, hope, and joy.
For as scripture proclaims: “the greatest of these is love.”
May love guide our journey to Christmas and beyond.
(Light the first four Advent Candles)
Prayer
God of love, God of peace, God of hope and joy,
be with us in our darkness,
be with us in our light.
Emmanuel, be with us always and everywhere,
that we may know and be
the love and light you create us to be.
In your love and light, we pray. Amen.

*Hymn of Praise: Love Came Down at Christmas – UMH 242
1. Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love divine;
Love was born at Christmas; star and angels gave sign.
2. Worship we the Godhead, Love incarnate, Love divine;
Worship we our Jesus, but wherewith for sacred signs?
3. Love shall be our token; Love be yours and love be mine;
Love to God and neighbor, love for plea and gift and sign.
An Advent Story with Grandma Carolyn for the young and young at heart.
Hebrew Bible Lesson: 2 Samuel 7: 1-11, 16 (NRSV)
Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2 the king said to the prophet Nathan, “See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.” 3 Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.”
4 But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5 Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? 6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. 7 Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” 8 Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; 9 and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house.
16 Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever.
Hymn: Emmanuel, Emmanuel – UMH 204[i]
Emmanuel, Emmanuel, his name is called Emmanuel.
God with us, revealed in us, his name is called Emmanuel.
*Gospel Lesson: Luke 1: 26-38 (NRSV)
26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
Words of God, Words of Life: Thanks be to God!
Preparation: Welcome to Our World[ii]
Tears are falling, hearts are breaking, how we need to hear from God.
You’ve been promised, we’ve been waiting, welcome holy Child,
Welcome holy Child.
Hope that you don’t mind our manger,
how I wish we would have known.
But long-awaited holy stranger, make yourself at home,
Please make yourself at home.
Bring your peace into our violence, bid our hungry souls be filled.
Word no breaking Heaven’s silence, welcome to our world,
Welcome to our world.
Fragile finger sent to heal us, tender brow prepared for thorn,
Tiny heart whose blood will save us, unto us is born,
Welcome to our world.
So wrap our injured flesh around you,
breathe our air and walk our sod.
Rob our sin and make us holy, perfect Son of God,
Perfect Son of God, welcome to our world.

“Welcome to our World”
Response: Star Child – FWS 2095, vs. 4[iii]
Spared child, spoiled child, having wanting more,
Wise child, faith child, knowing joy in store.
This year, this year, let the day arrive
When Christmas comes for everyone, everyone alive!
A Moment of Thanksgiving
Christmas Doxology (to the tune of Infant Holy, Infant Lowly)[iv]:
Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to Christ the Son.
Glory to the Holy Spirit, Glory to the Three in One.
This we offer, to you gladly, all the gifts that you impart,
As we glory in your presence, giving from a grateful heart.
Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
*Closing Hymn: It Came Upon the Midnight Clear – UMH 218
1. It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth good will to all, from heaven’s all gracious King.”
2. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled,
And still their heavenly music floats o’re all the weary world;
Above its sad and lowly plains, they bend on hovering wing,
And ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.
3. And ye, beneath life’s crushing load, whose forms are bending low,
Who toiling along the climbing way with painful steps and slow,
Look now! For glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing.
O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing.
4. For lo! The days are hastening on, by prophet seen of old,
When with the ever-circling years shall come the time fortold
When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling,
And the whole world send back the song which now the angels sing.
